CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 25: Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. is going to Tent City, located along the Dan Ryan Expressway and Roosevelt Rd on December 25, 2020 to distribute home-cooked meals to the homeless.

This year’s Christmas meal giveaway is sponsored by the New Faith MBC, on the South Side, where Rev. Jackson’s national youth director, Rev. Cameron Barnes, is an associate minister.

The meals program was the idea of Tess Hill, a member of Barnes’ church, who raised the idea of feeding those who live in tents along the expressway and was quickly seconded by Barnes. “She has agreed to cook 50 meals,” said Barnes.

“We show our sense of faith in the church by giving back to those in need,” said Rev. Jackson, not only because it is Christmas, the day Christ was born, but also it is Founder’s Day at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. It is Rev. Jackson’s way of carrying on the mission of “feeding the hungry and clothing the naked” as the bible says.

Feeding the homeless on Christmas Day has become a tradition to Rev. Jackson who today celebrates the 54th anniversary since he began Operation Breadbasket that today is ultimately known around the world as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition at Tent City in Chicago Illinois
